Toners have become less
common in many people’s skin care regimes over recent years as their function
hasn’t been understood as well as cleansers or moisturisers. However, they have
several important functions and can also be applied to underarms and legs to
soothe redness and irritated skin, for example, after shaving. If kept in the
fridge on a hot day they are wonderful to spray on the skin to cool it down,
minimize unwanted shine and help prevent break-outs on hard to reach areas like
the back. Some popular ingredients being used in preparatory toners currently
are cucumber, marshmallow root, willow bark and menthol extracts as well as
salicylic acid, combining anti-inflammatory, wound healing, anti-microbial and
soothing properties to clear pores and reduce acne and roughness. They have the
added bonus of preparing the face superbly for post-care skin regimes, leave it
feeling clean, fresh and allowing for the smooth application of make-up.
Some common conditions
that can be improved by using a well formulated toner are; eczema, rosacea, keratosis
pilaris, fine lines, mild pigmentation, acne/open pores, unwanted shine/excess
oil, sensitivity and dehydrated/tired skin. Toners also have the added benefit
of pH balancing, a great all-rounder!
