Seasonal Feature Article - Rosacea

Skin Deep – February 2012

Welcome to ‘Skin Deep’ – This month’s feature looks at our ‘New Look Feature Article - Rosacea’.
Any questions, just ask Dr. Angie Winnington-Sharp www.cheshireskinclinic.com angie@cheshireskinclinic.com or 01925 263660 & 07967 481594.  Next month’s feature - Acne.

Many people suffer with a condition called rosacea which presents itself typically in people during their 30s and 40s and tends to be more noticeable during the colder months of the year. It is marked by redness (erythema) of the face, flushing of the skin, and sometimes the presence of hard pimples and small visible spider-like veins called telangiectasias. In later stages of the disease, the face may swell and the nose may take on a bulb-like appearance called rhinophyma. The severity of the condition can be reduced by the application of a range of medical applications but is frequently successfully treated and ‘managed’ by a course of pulsed light treatments which reduce the redness and also assist in making the skin feel less itchy and much smoother.
The treatment itself is non-invasive and takes around 2-5 minutes to treat the face. Applications for home-use that assist in prolonging the effects of the light treatment are advised post-treatment in addition to regular hydration, such as regular fluid intake. The latter is particularly useful when changing environments such as coming indoors into a room with central heating on directly after being exposed to cooler conditions.
For many sufferers the use of steroids or excessive cover-up make-up is not desirable, so this treatment provides an excellent route to tackling the condition and giving the individual a confidence boost that is both affordable and lifestyle friendly.

New Year Skin Revolution!

Skin Deep – January 2012
South Warrington News

Welcome to ‘Skin Deep’ – This month’s feature looks at ‘New Year Skin-Revolutions’.
Any questions, just ask Dr. Angie Winnington-Sharp www.cheshireskinclinic.com angie@cheshireskinclinic.com or 01925 263660 & 07967 481594.  Next month launches a ‘new look’ article.

Last month we discussed the importance of being ‘Skin-Coherent’ and incorporating all aspects of holistic skin care. This month is the start of a ‘Skin-Revolution’. New Year is typically a time when many of us take stock of what is truly important in our lives and think about forming new priorities to tackle in the year ahead. Skin is something that many of us take for granted, but it shows our outer self clearly and is an excellent indicator of our inner wellbeing. With very little effort, we can pamper our skin and look ‘fantabulous’ over the next twelve months.
Basic ‘at home steps’ may include the purchase of a product that is tailor made to suit your individual skin, again this doesn’t have to mean buying expensive lotions and potions, it can mean spending as little as £20 as an investment to last for the next 2-3 months.  An ideal solution is to purchase a ‘Mini-Kit’ of selected products from a skin specialist that will give you a taster or a variety of medical and cosmeceutical grade items that you can trial in the privacy of your own home and then give feedback to your specialist to enable them to assess your skin response and act accordingly. Normally for as little as £25-50 per month, it is possible to establish a regime that will leave your skin looking better than ever, without breaking the bank.
If desired this can also be done in conjunction with a monthly or bimonthly non-surgical treatment to boost your rejuvenation and maximise the improvement to your skin and personal outlook for the coming months and years – take care of yourself from the outside and inner comfort and satisfaction is sure to follow.

Preparing your skin for a Seasonal change - essentials!

Welcome to ‘Skin Deep’ – This month’s feature looks at ‘preparing your skin for a seasonal change’. Any questions, just ask Dr. Angie Winnington-Sharp www.cheshireskinclinic.com angie@cheshireskinclinic.com or 01925 263660 & 07967 481594.  Next month we’ll be looking at ‘Christmas Treats’.

In the UK the weather can change rapidly as the last few weeks have shown.  Changes in temperature and humidity can give rise to flare-ups of existing conditions such as rosacea, acne, eczema and thread veins.  Fluctuations in humidity and hydration can also cause general dryness and an increased appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation. For a home-use solution there are some medical formulations that can be purchased directly from a professional skin clinic (not recommended via the internet as it is correct practice to see a skin specialist when purchasing to ensure you get the product(s) that are best suited to your skin).
There are a variety of serums, retinol containing products, rapid-hydration systems and catalyst gels that can immediately start to improve the appearance of your skin.  Some of the most advanced of these can also be used in conjunction with laser and/or chemical peel based equipment in the more extreme cases. For example, the treatment of rosacea, if deemed moderate to severe, is most successfully achieved if a multi-wavelength laser is used in conjunction with a hydrating product in order to tackle both the redness and the dry/itchy/inflamed skin.
For the best advice, seek out a local skin clinic that offers a range of treatments and not one ‘magic solution’, and talk through your specific needs and goals. The best time to start is now, as increased central heating use, coupled with cold, breezy weather outside, can exacerbate the condition and mean that it will take longer to treat in the future. Also look out for seasonal offers as you may be able to take advantage of these in the weeks coming up to, and just after, Christmas.

Seasonal FAQs - the Essential Guide

Skin Deep – October 2011
South Warrington News

Welcome to ‘Skin Deep’ – This month’s feature looks at ‘FAQs’. Any questions, just ask Dr. Angie Winnington-Sharp http://www.cheshireskinclinic.com/ angie@cheshireskinclinic.com or 01925 263660 & 07967 481594.  Next month we’ll be looking at ‘preparing your skin for a seasonal change’.

FAQ’s do change depending on the season and new technologies, but the most frequent & common questions for non-surgical techniques tend to revolve around the same key issues; cost, pain (if any) and how does it work:
(1)     Can I have laser hair removal on blonde/white hair? YES you can, but it depends on the specific system that your clinic has.  If it is able to target haemoglobin as well as melanin and has variable settings it will work on all hair colours – ask what system they use and if they have had previous success.
(2)     Can you really improve the appearance of cellulite? Thank goodness the answer is YES! Radio-frequency techniques, sometimes combined with others, are excellent at body toning, improving the texture of the skin and removing cellulite naturally from the body, no invasion, surgery or laser is required and it doesn’t hurt – the sensation is that of a gentle, warming massage – perfect!
(3)     What is an appropriate cost for laser/IPL treatments as they seem to vary considerably? Basically, the cost depends on the size of the area being treated and the extent of the condition. An average cost for an underarm hair removal treatment is £50-60 per session, this should decrease as the area shrinks and you shouldn’t be expected to pay for multiple treatments up front if you don’t want to. Larger areas such as ½ legs will cost more and thread vein/acne treatments vary on the severity/length of time you have had them.
These are just three typical questions, please send in more and I’ll answer as many as possible over the coming months. Try to focus on treatments that you would like done in the run up to autumn/winter and New Year.

Cellulite & Stretch Mark Treatments

Skin Deep – August 2011
South Warrington News

Welcome to ‘Skin Deep’ – This month’s feature looks at ‘getting rid of cellulite and stretch marks’. Any questions, just ask Dr. Angie Winnington-Sharp www.cheshireskinclinic.com angie@cheshireskinclinic.com or 01925 263660 & 07967 481594.  Next month we’ll be looking at ‘NEW *Star Letter Response*’.

Cellulite and stretch marks can form on men and women at a variety of ages, the most common reasons for their presence being; a growth spurt in teenage years, dramatic weight loss/gain due to diet or pregnancy etc, diet and fitness levels and simple genetics. Whatever causes these conditions, the outcome is normally that the person suffering with them develops a reduced self-esteem and will try and cover the affected area.  However, there is a non-surgical treatment, which can reduce or remove them (depending on the severity, age of client, response type etc) which involves radio-frequency and (in some instances, depending on individual circumstances established during the pre-treatment consultation) combining this with a laser/variable pulsed light system.  The treatments last between 15 and 60 minutes and an improvement is often seen after just one. A course of treatments are normally recommended, in conjunction with a diet/fitness regime to maximise results and minimise the number of treatments required.
This month Cheshire Skin Clinic is offering a ‘10% discount off any treatments booked at the clinic before 30.09.11’ to the winner of our new ‘Star Letter Feature’. Please send any questions/experiences you have had to angie@cheshireskinclinic.com and I will print the winning letter and award the prize in next month’s South Warrington News.

New, most advanced VPL system now at Cheshire Skin Clinic!

Many people are now becoming familiar with the terms laser, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and VPL (Variable Pulsed Light) – the latter being the newest and most sophisticated form of the science based technology that can be used to remove hair, thread veins, acne, pigment, wrinkles and various other skin conditions. The majority of the most advanced systems are actually manufactured in the UK due to the strong research and development departments that we have at our universities. One such manufacturing company has recently launched a VPL ‘Ultra Plus’ system that now comes with additional hand-pieces that enable the operator to perform high energy medical treatments that out-perform any of the ‘beauty based systems’ on the market.  This means that it is now possible to treat more severe conditions of acne and associated scarring, more stubborn hairs and thread veins. By doing this, it gives the clinical professional previously unavailable settings that can be tailor-made to suit any potential client. The UK is leading the way in the development of VPL and actually supplies the majority of it’s systems to the United States due to the exceptional levels achieved.  It is therefore essential when booking a consultation that you ask your practitioner which supplier they use as there are a myriad of cheap imitation systems on the market that do not perform to the same level of accuracy or safety. If in doubt request to see a calibration certificate for the machine which will list the date of manufacture and most recent calibration checks, plus the origin of manufacture. Dr Angie Winnington-Sharp at Cheshire Skin Clinic is proud to be one of the first clinical professionals to offer this treatment system to all of her clients - new for 2011, why delay - book today.http://www.cheshireskinclinic.com/
