People often ask a range of
similar questions regarding non-surgical/laser based treatments, mainly
regarding colours of hair that can be treated, number of treatments, costing
etc. However, every year there are a variety of new ‘popular celebrity
treatments’ that creep into the market and demand high interest. Hence in this
series of ‘frequently asked questions’ I’m going to focus on a few of those.
1. Can dermal rollers get rid
of scars and stretch marks? If used on their own, dermal rollers will not
completely remove scars or stretch marks, but they will greatly improve their
appearance. If used in conjunction with a light based treatment and/or chemical
peel, then, in some instances, they will become completely invisible to the
naked eye, with just a slight indication of where they were if the area is
pressed firmly.
2. How does a laser help to
reduce wrinkles? Depending on the specific wavelength selected by the operator,
the penetration depth of the light used can be tailored to target superficial
(fine) lines or deeper epidermal lines.
The body then perceives the skin as requiring repair and initiates
fibroblasts to produce more natural collagen, thus plumping and smoothing the
area. This gives an overall rejuvenated appearance and a more youthful
complexion.
3. Can I have a laser
treatment to eradicate acne if on medication? If the medication is not
photo-sensitizing (doesn’t make the user sensitive to light) then the answer is
yes. However, many of the stronger, acne related medicines, such as Roaccutane
are contraindicated so you would have to complete/cease the course of
medication before having laser (some medication also has strong side effects,
so laser is frequently preferable).

Skin Care in the Sun - *Proactive Protection is the Key*

Well the sun is certainly
making a bit of an appearance at the moment, much to most people’s delight.
Sometimes, however, it’s easy to forget about looking after our skin in the sun
when we’re not on holiday. It is vitally important to wear a daily Sun
Protection Factor (SPF) to avoid premature ageing, redness, pigmentation and of
course minimise the risk of skin cancer.
The SPF doesn’t have to be high, for most people 15-25 is adequate, as
long as it is reapplied on a regular basis. There are also a range of hydrating
products that can be used to ensure that our skin remains supple and
fresh. I recommend a specific range of
products in the clinic including a rejuvenating lotion, moisturising protector,
SPF and a medically formulated serum to maximise skin care and ward off any
damage from the heat and light. At the
same time improving the appearance, hydrating and protecting your skin. Skin
care isn’t all about reactive repair, proactive protection is the key!

Skin Deep - How to combat unwanted pigmentation

Welcome

It only takes a few days of
sunshine to make us smile and feel more positive. Maybe this year we will get a
lovely summer and a few more glorious bank holiday weekends where we get to
wear our sunglasses and flip-flops.
We know that Vitamin D is
good for us, but we also know that exposure to UV light isn’t, hence wearing a
good SPF is essential to protect our skin from damage and premature ageing. One
thing that can have a more noticeable ageing affect than fine lines and
wrinkles is excess pigment in our skin. As I am someone who develops more and more
freckles each year, despite wearing a
daily SPF, I am careful in the sun as there is a difference in appearance
between small freckles that develop quickly in bright sunlight and the gradual
onset of age spots that tend to be larger and don’t retreat when the weather
cools down. They can make a person look
a little older if on the more visible areas of the body, such as the face,
chest and hands. A good way of reducing them and then keeping them at bay is to
treat them with visible light that has the UV filtered out of it. This is a non-invasive way of removing excess
pigment, without damaging your underlying natural skin tone, and it takes just
a few minutes. The best time to treat darker pigment is just before or after
the main summer months and any planned holidays. So then next time we get a dip
in the temperature, why not take advantage of the cooler conditions and perfect
your skin before the holiday season really starts.
