Skin Care Special Secrets - **how to look good during the Menopause**

Some of the best kept skin care special secrets regarding all aspects of skin rejuvenation are applicable during that ‘time in a woman’s life’ (hot flushes, night sweats….you know what I mean), the ‘M’ word. Common problems that can arise are:
·         Acne – not really what you may expect after your teenage years, but commonly associated with additional adrenal production, this stimulates testosterone and with that comes hormonal acne (mainly lower face/neck). This is not related to oily skin and responds well to light, some chemicals and home-use products.
·         Rosacea – this ranges from general redness to an overall bumpy/uneven skin tone and can be highly irritating. Best treated with intense light and regular hydrating products.
·         Pigmentation – those pesky hormones again, hyper-pigment is common (slightly different to post-pregnancy melasma, which tends to be related to excess oestrogen). Best targeted with a combination of light (for the deeper patches) and peels (for the superficial pigment) and can be assisted at home to prevent any further inflammation within the skin, which contributes towards the excess pigment.
·         Skin ageing – related to a reduction in oestrogen, collagen decline, thinning and lack of elasticity. The skin may become drier, ‘flaky’ and needs excess hydration to compensate for the slower cell turnover and to strengthen the skin barrier defence and natural healing processes. This leads to collagen regeneration.

All of the above can also be discouraged by regularly using an approved SPF with good UVA & B protection.
