Preparing your skin for a Seasonal change - essentials!

Welcome to ‘Skin Deep’ – This month’s feature looks at ‘preparing your skin for a seasonal change’. Any questions, just ask Dr. Angie Winnington-Sharp www.cheshireskinclinic.com angie@cheshireskinclinic.com or 01925 263660 & 07967 481594.  Next month we’ll be looking at ‘Christmas Treats’.

In the UK the weather can change rapidly as the last few weeks have shown.  Changes in temperature and humidity can give rise to flare-ups of existing conditions such as rosacea, acne, eczema and thread veins.  Fluctuations in humidity and hydration can also cause general dryness and an increased appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation. For a home-use solution there are some medical formulations that can be purchased directly from a professional skin clinic (not recommended via the internet as it is correct practice to see a skin specialist when purchasing to ensure you get the product(s) that are best suited to your skin).
There are a variety of serums, retinol containing products, rapid-hydration systems and catalyst gels that can immediately start to improve the appearance of your skin.  Some of the most advanced of these can also be used in conjunction with laser and/or chemical peel based equipment in the more extreme cases. For example, the treatment of rosacea, if deemed moderate to severe, is most successfully achieved if a multi-wavelength laser is used in conjunction with a hydrating product in order to tackle both the redness and the dry/itchy/inflamed skin.
For the best advice, seek out a local skin clinic that offers a range of treatments and not one ‘magic solution’, and talk through your specific needs and goals. The best time to start is now, as increased central heating use, coupled with cold, breezy weather outside, can exacerbate the condition and mean that it will take longer to treat in the future. Also look out for seasonal offers as you may be able to take advantage of these in the weeks coming up to, and just after, Christmas.
