**Essential Skin Nutrition** - All you Need to Know about Vitamins

Welcome to ‘Skin Deep’ – This month’s feature looks at our ‘Essential Skin Nutrition’.
Any questions, just ask Dr. Angie Winnington-Sharp www.cheshireskinclinic.com angie@cheshireskinclinic.com or 01925 263660 & 07967 481594.
Next month – ‘How to make your Eyes your Best Feature’.

All skin cells require the correct nutrition to function properly and remain healthy and youthful. Just as we attempt to eat healthily for our physical wellbeing, it is essential to provide nutrients via topical application to nourish our skin. The skin contains cell receptors which are specific for each essential nutrient, for maximum benefit, all of the receptors must be provided for. The main nutrients we require are; Vitamin A for normal cell growth and collagen synthesis, this gives us better texture, firmness and a more youthful appearance. Vitamin B is essential for an improved barrier function and keratin formation, resulting in a natural protection from the sun/UV. Vitamin C’s role is to protect cell membranes from oxidation, which leads to photo-protective properties and hence skin brightening and a reduction in visible ageing. Vitamin D stimulates the epidermal cell turnover. This is what we require for good hydration and texture. It also, vitally, improves cell immunity and natural anti-inflammatory activity which can help prevent skin cancer. Vitamin is a good ‘oil-soluble’ ‘all-rounder’. It is an antioxidant, prevents free radical damage, gives photo-protection, protects cell structure, enhances our natural barrier function and improves the appearance of any damaged, rough/dry skin.

So, next time you visit your skin specialist be candid about the areas of your skin that you would like to improve and disclose any problem areas that you perceive, no matter how small they may seem. Professional skin clinics will stock a selected range of cosmeceuticals (cosmetic/pharmaceutical grade products) that are formulated to renew, defend and protect the skin. You do not necessarily need high concentrations of specific key ingredients to give the best outcome, most recommended products will have a balance that is closely matched to the proportion of each ingredient required within a healthy cell to function correctly. These products will also encourage you not to ‘over-exfoliate’ your skin. This is a common misconception, which can actually be damaging. With the correct balance of vitamins your skin will be able to naturally shed old skin cells and produce new cells to fortify your skin barrier and control excess oils/sebum without the need to use physical abrasion on the area.
