The eye area is the first place that someone normally notices when looking at another person and can be an area that is an instant give away to our age, levels of tiredness and general fatigue. The area is particularly sensitive and not all treatments/products are appropriate for use due to the sensitivity of the skin.

Non-invasive radio-frequency (RF) is one of the few procedures which is entirely safe for the area and it is fantastic for removing fine lines, giving the skin a natural lift. It also reduces excess fluid so improves the appearance of puffiness and bags. The treatment normally costs less than £50 and can be done as a one off for a special event, or a regular treatment once every 6-8 weeks to prevent reoccurrence. It is entirely comfortable and feels like a slightly warm massage of the area. To enhance the treatment further and give results that last for 12-16 weeks there are specially formulated serums available for home-use, these cost under £40 and hence an annual treatment schedule can cost as little as £12.50-17 per month (based on 3-4 treatments a year with 1-2 product packs = £150-200). This can prove much more cost effective than buying even the budget brand products from the high street and has a longer lasting effect with much deeper skin penetration depth.

Toners have become less common in many people’s skin care regimes over recent years as their function hasn’t been understood as well as cleansers or moisturisers. However, they have several important functions and can also be applied to underarms and legs to soothe redness and irritated skin, for example, after shaving. If kept in the fridge on a hot day they are wonderful to spray on the skin to cool it down, minimize unwanted shine and help prevent break-outs on hard to reach areas like the back. Some popular ingredients being used in preparatory toners currently are cucumber, marshmallow root, willow bark and menthol extracts as well as salicylic acid, combining anti-inflammatory, wound healing, anti-microbial and soothing properties to clear pores and reduce acne and roughness. They have the added bonus of preparing the face superbly for post-care skin regimes, leave it feeling clean, fresh and allowing for the smooth application of make-up.

Some common conditions that can be improved by using a well formulated toner are; eczema, rosacea, keratosis pilaris, fine lines, mild pigmentation, acne/open pores, unwanted shine/excess oil, sensitivity and dehydrated/tired skin. Toners also have the added benefit of pH balancing, a great all-rounder!

Many light based laser and pulsed light treatments are safe to do on a range of skin types, but not when someone has excessive pigment in their skin i.e. a tan, as this can mean the response is affected and the treatment can be irregular.

However, the good news is that there are some procedures that are completely unaffected by a tan. Amongst the most popular are radio-frequency treatments, These can be done for body toning, cellulite and stretch mark removal, non-surgical face lifts and muscular strains/sporting injuries. What a perfect pre-holiday feel good therapy….get beach body beautiful, look sculpted, feel taught and toned and give yourself a flawless boost. As the procedure is non-invasive, no one would even know that you had a little ‘assistance’ in your amazing physique, and there are no side effects, woo hoo! Get ready to ‘strut your stuff’ and look truly incredible.

Choosing the Correct Chemical Peel for You

Skin Deep – July 2015

Chemical Peels come in a vast range of formulations and strengths so choosing the correct one is something that is important to discuss with your skin specialist. The blend selected will be dependent on the condition that you are having treated, ranging from anti-aging, acne, scarring, rosacea, deep wrinkles etc. It is also imperative to simultaneously look at the disruption to the skin barrier that is desired to permit any desired inflammation whilst preventing any excess damage or unwanted deeper peeling. The overall effect should be to renew, fortify and repair, thus culminating in a healthy, rejuvenated effect. Important goals are to increase cell turnover, balance pH, and keep healthy oils within the skin.

Good bullet points to remember before your consultation are: acknowledge your own skin type, do not opt for a peel because a ‘celebrity’ has had one. Do not use in conjunction with a physical exfoliator as this can overly dry the skin and damage the new, fresh skin cells. Try a peel with no/minimal preservatives, fragrances or synthetic chemicals.

Radio-Frequency is a great non-invasive way of creating a non-surgical face lift and has no associated downtime. The results are seen after just one treatment and you get the added benefit of getting a cumulative effect with subsequent treatments, meaning that the results get better and last longer with each visit.
The best way to maximise the results are by hydrating the skin with a good emollient, as recommended by your skin specialist. The product will help to strengthen your skin barrier and promote collagen and elasticity to help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles. The best products are also non-comedogenic i.e. they do not clog pores and they reduce redness, inflammation and optimise cell renewal. You may also find that your skin will benefit from a more concentrated formulation during the cooler months and possibly a very mild retinoid based product during the warmer months that has no associated irritation of skin-thinning side effects.
Most people find that after a non-surgical face lift the main areas to focus your home based treatment regime are periocular wrinkling (i.e. apply a suitable serum around the delicate eye area), loose skin around the upper neck and forehead furrows.

Ask your clinician what product(s) will give you maximum anti-oxidant properties with additional firming and toning characteristics, typically these will come from natural vitamins (not synthetic) and will extend the effects of the treatment by up to 6-8 weeks.

Most non-surgical clinic treatments tend to be focussed on the face. However, there are a growing number of excellent treatments for the body that can help to lift, tone and sculpt areas of concern. Commonly these are the neck, abdomen, buttocks, thighs and upper arms. Radio-Frequency is a great way of giving a more defined appearance and can really improve self-esteem, plus give a much needed boost in the run up to any planned holiday and the associated ‘beach attire’.
Radio-Frequency (RF) (unlike some light based treatments) is perfectly safe to have with a tan and is pain free. With a variety of different settings, RF can be used to assist with muscular injuries, reduction of stretch marks & cellulite and also to maximise muscle tone and definition. This in turn can provide an ideal ‘kick start’ with other lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet and exercise etc. As part of a tailor-made plan RF can really help to transform your self-perception, boost confidence and make you look like your ‘best ever self’.
